Garden tools

Garden tools are our main helpers in the process of caring for plants, yet their maintenance often goes unnoticed. In fact, regular cleaning and proper storage significantly increase the durability of tools and at the same time protect the garden from the spread of diseases.

If tools are dirty or have touched an infected plant, they can become carriers of bacteria and fungi. That is why caring for them is just as important as caring for the plants themselves.

Daily care

Cleaning tools after every use is essential.

  • Remove dirt and debris with water or a brush

  • Use soapy water for deep cleaning

  • Be sure to dry the tools to prevent rust

If a tool has touched a diseased plant, disinfection is also necessary — for example, with alcohol or a diluted chlorine solution.

 Rust prevention and care

Moisture is the main enemy of tools.

  • Always dry them before storing

  • Periodically apply oil to the metal parts

  • If rust appears, use a vinegar and water solution and then clean it

This process protects tools from corrosion and increases their lifespan.

 Sharp tools — healthy plants

Dull cutting tools damage the plant, because branches are cut improperly and become infected more easily.

  • Use a special sharpener

  • Sharpen only in one direction

  • Follow safety rules (gloves, safety glasses)

 Handle care

Wooden handles also need attention:

  • Clean regularly with a damp cloth

  • Check for cracks or damage

  • Seasonally use linseed oil so it does not dry out or crack

A damaged handle must be replaced, because it also creates a safety risk.

 Proper storage

Proper storage is just as important as cleaning:

  • Store in a dry, well-ventilated place

  • You can place small tools in sand

  • Hang large tools or arrange them so the blades are not damaged

 Seasonal care

Deep cleaning is recommended at least once a year:

  • Disassemble cutting tools

  • Clean each part separately

  • Disinfection and oil treatment

  • Then reassemble

This process ensures that the tools are ready for the new season.
