7 Important Steps for Planting a Tree Correctly

1. Prepare a hole of the appropriate size

The planting hole should be about three times wider than the root ball, but in depth, it should not exceed the level at which the plant grew before.

Pay attention to the flared part of the trunk, where the stem turns into roots. This area should not be covered with soil, as planting too deep can cause plant rot and disease.

2. Plant the tree slightly higher

It is desirable that the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the surrounding soil level — by about 25%.

Over time, the soil compacts and sinks. If the plant was planted too deep from the start, water may accumulate and cause root damage.

3. Check and straighten the roots

Container-grown plants often have roots that are tightly coiled in a circle. Before planting, it is necessary to carefully loosen them.

If the roots are heavily entangled, they can be partially pruned if necessary. Otherwise, they will stunt growth and the plant will not reach its full potential.

4. Do not add extra soil amendments

According to modern research, adding compost or other organic material to the hole is not recommended unless you are improving the entire area uniformly.

Roots often remain in the enriched soil and fail to penetrate the natural ground. Therefore, it is best to fill the hole with the same local soil from which it was dug.

5. Eliminate air pockets

When filling the hole, air pockets may remain in the soil, which causes the roots to dry out.

To prevent this, after filling the hole halfway, moisten the soil well with water. Repeat the same procedure after the final filling. Water helps to distribute the soil evenly around the roots.

6. Use mulch

Place about a 5-centimeter layer of organic mulch about 5 centimeters away from the trunk.

For mulch, you can use shredded bark, leaves, or other organic material. It retains moisture, regulates soil temperature, and prevents weed growth.

It is important that the mulch does not directly touch the stem.

7. Ensure proper watering

After planting, the most important duty is regular watering until the plant is fully established.

Daily watering is recommended during the first week. For the next two weeks — every other day, and then the frequency should gradually decrease.

Watering should be slow and deep so that the water reaches the root system. Shallow and quick watering is less effective.

At the same time, you should also avoid overwatering, as excess moisture can cause root rot. Monitor the condition of the plant: if the leaves wither and the soil is dry — it needs more water, while constantly wet soil may be a sign of overwatering.
